MILFORD SOUND
Milford Sound is a beautiful area very popular for walking ,boating and scenic flight tours.
It was created by glacial activity nearly 20,000 years ago.
The first European to discover the place was Captain Gurano in 1820.
He named it Milford after his hometown in Wales.
The first real European explorations were done by Donald Thousaland in 1877.
He built a cabin and settled there near the famous 585m waterfall which is one of the highest in the world.
The Milford walking track is known as the most beautiful in the world. The total length of the track is 55km and it takes about 5 days to walk from Te Anau to Milford including the launch ride. There are guided walks and booking is essential. There are instances of womwn over 80 enjoying this walk soanyone in good health can do it. The walking season is from the middle of November to the end of March.
Other local attractions include Te Anau Caves where you can see glow worms.
The trip by launch takes about two and a half hours.
Lake Manapouri which is the deepest lake in New Zealand and Mitre Peak, the symbol of Milford Sound.
Mitre Peak is a huge triangular shaped rock named because it looks like the crown of a Catholic bishop.
It is 1692m high.
